Generic Name: Modafinil
Provigil [Modafinil] Description
The exact methodology of Generic Modafinil is not known, but it acts on certain neurotransmitters - histamine, hypocretin, and dopamine in the brain - that are related to sleep, in such a manner that it is somehow able to regulate the sleeping-waking routine in individuals, and enhance wakefulness/alertness. This medicine is used to treat Narcolepsy, a chronic sleeping disorder, and other conditions arising out of it.
Uses of Provigil
[EDS], Shift Work Sleep Disorder [SWSD], or Obstructive Sleep Apnea [OSA]. Provigil is meant for treating sleeping disorders in adults, as well as children who are 16 and above.
The medicine comes in two strengths - 100mg and 200mg tablets.
How to Use Provigil
The dose and the time for the dose, depends on the overall medical condition and the condition being treated. Take the medicine exactly as prescribed by your physician. It's a single daily dose that has to be taken with water. If your physician advises you to do so then you can take it with your meals.
Missed Dose of Provigil
Consult your doctor if you miss a dose. The medicine is to help you to stay awake, and if you do miss a dose, take the next dose only if you plan to stay awake for many hours following that. If your bedtime is nearing, leave the missed dose; don't double your dose.
Side-effects of Provigil
Some of the common, less serious side effects can include:-
- Insomnia
- Headaches
- Stuffy nose
- Nausea
- Nervousness
- Dizziness
- Dry mouth
An allergic reaction such as:- itching, rash [which can be severe, or peel off], or a swelling in the face/throat, means that you should stop the medicine and ask your doctor for help.
Overdose of Provigil
If you think you've overdosed, contact your local poison control center or emergency room at once. US residents can call the US national poison hotline at 1-800-222-1222. Symptoms can include: insomnia, agitation, nervousness, confusion, excitement, tremors, slight/moderate increase in hemodyamic parameters, hypertension, tachycardia/bradycardia, chest pain, nausea, or diarrhea.
Interactions of Provigil
On it's own, Modafinil is not known to have caused any fatalities. Some of the medicines/products with which Provigil interacts, are:-
- Immunosuppressants such as Cyclosporine
- Drugs for TB like Rifampin
- Medicines for hypertension such as Propranolol
- Anti-convulsants like Carbamazepine, Phenytoin, or Pregabalin
- Sedatives such as Diazepam, or Triazolam
- Tricyclic anti-depressants like Amitriptyline, or Imipramine
- MAOIs such as Phenelzine, Rasagiline, or Selegiline
- Hormone medicines for hypothyroidism such as Synthroid
- Alcohol
- Nicotine
- Caffeine
Storage of Provigil
After you buy Provigil, store it at a room temperature of 20oC-25oC, safe from heat, light and dampness. Keep it out of reach of children and pets.
Precautions of Provigil
- Pregnant or lactating women should consult their doctor before taking this medicine.
- Avoid taking alcohol along with it, as it can have a contrary effect.
