Acomplia [Rimonabant] Description
Rimonabant is purportedly the first in a group of therapeutic medications known as cannabinoid-1 receptor blockers, working in the endocannabinoid [EC] system. The EC system has been found to regulate body weight, as well as controlling energy, glucose and lipid levels in the body. Rimonabant inhibits the cannabinoid-1 receptors, blocking the signals that lead to hunger which, in turn, makes people feel less hungry.
Uses of Acomplia
Acomplia is used as a weight management drug. It is not recommended for children below 18, or geriatrics above 75.
How to Use Acomplia
It is given to those with a body mass index [BMI] of 30; but if a person has type-2 diabetes, or dyslipidemia, then the BMI should be 27 or above.
Take the dose exactly as prescribed by your physician. It is a recommended as a once-a-day dose, to be taken before breakfast.
Missed Dose of Acomplia
Since it's a single dose, you are not likely to miss it. If you do miss a dose, try to take it soon, but if it's going to be time for your next dose, leave the missed dose and take the regular one; don't double your dose.
Side-effects of Acomplia
Some of the common, less serious side effects may include:-
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Dizziness
- Back pain, or sciatica
- Infections of the upper airways
- Muscular cramps/pain
- Sleep disorders
- Decreased sensation to touch, or pain.
An allergic reaction such as:- itching, rash, tendon inflammation, means that you should stop the medicine and ask your doctor for help.
Overdose of Acomplia
If you feel you've overdosed, US residents can call the US national poison hotline at 1-800-222-1222. In the event if the victim collapses or stops breathing, call local emergency services at 911.
Acomplia Interactions
Some of the medicines with which Rimonabant interacts, are:-
- Antidepressants such as Nefazodone
- Anti-seizure medicines like Carbamazepine
- Anti-epileptics such as Phenytoin, or Phenobarbital
- Protease Inhibitors for HIV/AIDS such as Ritonavir
- Medicines for TB & Leprosy such as Rifampicin
- Antibiotics such as Clarithromycin, or Telithromycin
- Antifungals like Itraconazole, or Ketoconazole
- Herbal medications like St. John's Wort.
Acomplia Storage
You can store it at room temperature, safe from heat, light and dampness. Keep it out of reach of children and pets.
Precautions of Acomplia
- Before treatment begins, patients must inform the doctor of their medical history, particularly if there is a history of depression or suicidal ideation, any psychiatric disorder, epilepsy, kidney/liver disorder, or if they have suffered from a heart attack or stroke within the last 6 months.
- It is important to combine this medicine with reduced calorie intake and a proper exercise regime to get better results.
- It is recommended that you do not attempt to treat yourself by taking, increasing, decreasing, or stopping the medicine on your own.
- Never share your medicine with anyone else, even if they have similar symptoms it can do more harm than good to that person.
