Brand Name: Accutane
Generic Name: Isotretinoin
Accutane [Isotretinoin] Description
Isotretinoin is a retinoid [a derivative of Vitamin A], useful in treating severe acne. It reduces the amount of sebum secreted by the skin's oil glands. It's also considered to work similarly as other retinoids and decrease the production of keratin [a protein], which causes a build-up of cells in the skin's hair follicles that is a factor leading to acne.
Uses of Accutane
This medicine, in tablets and gel, is used to treat moderate to severe acne, particularly when other methods of treating acne fail to yield results. For use in children, consult the pediatrician.
The medicine has other uses also.
How to Use Accutane
Take the dose exactly as prescribed. It's an oral medicine, usually taken twice daily. The capsule should be swallowed quickly with a glassful of water to avoid irritating the throat. Taking the medicine with food is essential for better absorption.
Missed Dose of Accutane
Consult your doctor if you miss a dose. If you do miss a dose, then try to take the missed dose as soon as you can, but if time is nearing for the next dose, then leave the missed dose and take the regular one; don't double your dose.
Side-effects of Accutane
Some of the common, less serious side effects may include:-
- Joint/back pain
- Drowsiness, or dizziness
- Water retention
- Fatigue
- Nervousness
- Dryness in the lips/mouth/nose/skin
An allergic reaction such as:- itching, rash, cracking/peeling skin, swelling in the face/throat, or labored breathing means that you should stop the medicine and ask your doctor for help.
Overdose of Accutane
Overdose symptoms can include: Facial flushing, vomiting, abdominal/stomach-ache, headaches, dizziness, or loss of balance. US residents can call the US national poison hotline at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim collapses or stops breathing, call local emergency services at 911.
